Technology is the opium of Town

14.05.14 - Escrito por: Alejandro García Rosal

One can have got used to listening that Religion was the opium of town, but nowadays we suffer a new and stronger addictive invasion, TECHNOLOGY. Albert Einstein said once that, whenever we had a technological society, we would have a society of stupid citizens. I am afraid this moment has come.

People only communicate themselves via cellular, in most of the cases via that famous application with a green logo and a "free" service.

They even deal with important things, like work, or sentimental affairs. But from my point of view, the key point is that we are speaking about an immature society. If we, the people, manage with our problems, matters, affairs, or businesses via whatsapp, we really have a problem. If we, the people, are not able to live or to arrange a meeting without a cellular phone, we have a problem. If we, the people, force children to entertain and relate themselves electronically, we have a problem.

How has the world survived before then?

We see everyday people wandering through the streets, down headed, looking to the screen of their "smart" phones, becoming addicts of technology and its uses. Everything is done in/with/through/by/via the phone nowadays. Who is smarter then? The phone? The guy? None of the above answers is correct?

Intimately related to this, it is the profile of human being. Perfect basis for one to become an addict. We have then a society of compulsory consumers, not of citizens.

Though my reflection goes further... as money is behind everything, there are severe interests about people to become dependent, even addicts to things, becoming consumers, not citizens. Either legal or illegal, but this is a matter of reflection that would force a different "corner".

Then, this is the moment in which we are dealing with Techevilnology

And technology has found the way to create new consumers since the very infancy stages. The earlier one starts, the earlier one become an "easy-led". Less autonomous, more dependent. Less useful, more useless.

Panem et circenses, "Bread and circus". That is what roman emperors used to do to keep the town entertained and avoid them to think and be critic. Free entertainment is what makes us be alienated, and not self-critics. What makes us being an easier crowd to manage with.

How has this affected personal relationships?

This has given way to another Lost Generation. Until now, we only knew that of Faulkner, Steinbeck and Hemingway. Now we have a new one. A Lost generation, this and next to come that would never go to the main square of their towns waiting for their friends to meet them.

How do you, dear reader, want to be?
Either or

I am afraid, if we keep on doing things like that -and we are absolute responsible about the life we want to have in a near future- our destiny is clear....

And the pictures... Millions of pictures are taken with the cellular phones every Easter, Christmas, Fair, travel, party, etc. and the question is, where would they go later? Our lives are two pictures which end into the sea...

Then, have fun and enjoy your personal and outdoor relationships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
