The English Corner: Life in the Quarters or how to survive to Lent.

09.03.11 - Escrito por: Alex García Rosal

One can imagine how life in quarters can, or maybe could be. Some harsh stuff.

But times luckily have changed. Even to the point that the figure of a new Quarter has established in the Egabrense society.

Just today, Lent is arriving to the town of Cabra.

A period of withdrawal and devotion, inner life, preparing the celebration of Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.

First of all, mixing the aspect of self invention of this kind of articles, with the “serious” and scientific one, I am going to depict which Lent and Easter consist of, and their etymological origin.

Lent

This word comes from the Old English word lencten, which was the name of the season equivalent to our Spring. It was later introduced into modern English as Lent to refer to the name of the religious period of fasting before Easter.

Easter

The word Easter probably derives from Eostre, the name of the Teutonic goddess of Spring and fertility. The Christians decided to use this word for the period when they remember the death of Christ and his return to life. According to some historians, the English Church used to take already existing words to express ecclesiastical terms.

One of the main aspects of Lent, socially speaking of course, is the phenomenon known as “Little Head Quarters”, also known as “Brotherhood houses”. They are places where members and followers join together to spend a nice time chatting, sharing experiences, having fun, etc., while the listen Easter music, smell some incense, or watch some videos.

Meeting at the Quarters provide you for sure with good company and long talks.

In these days, in Cabra is born a species that during the rest of the year keeps lethargic, and this is the worldwide known as Homo Cuartelillensis.

It deals with a person who lives in the Little Head Quarter, spends all the time in it. Most of the time, I think that he/she even sleeps in it. He finds social life, meals, drinks, coffee, desserts, cup and Cuban cigar. And obviously, devotion and withdrawal.

We are dealing with a species, in which all of us become and that we all have to take care of, because it can be a endangered species in brief.

The most fashionable topics this year will be “would we be allowed to smoke at the Quarters?”, “would we even be allowed to burn incense?”, “shall we change our moods of life because of the obsession with the law?”. I hope not.

Mean while, my beloved cornerers, enjoy the Lent and the Quarters, and prepare your bodies and your bank account for Easter.
